The National Law Enforcement Museum - A Matter of Honor
The National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial Fund
Elevating support and appreciation for the law enforcement profession.

Every day, more than 900,000 local, state, federal and tribal law enforcement officers are on the front lines of our criminal justice system — not only fighting crime, but risking their lives to serve and protect the American public. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) was established in 1984 as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, to support and honor law enforcement.

Mission Statement

NLEOMF's mission is to:
  • Generate increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers; and,
  • Provide information that will help promote law enforcement safety.

NLEOMF Initiatives

Through its initiatives and programs, the NLEOMF has worked hard in:
  • Honoring Fallen Heroes
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial
Completed in 1991 and located in Judiciary Square in Washington, DC (400 block of E Street, NW), the Memorial currently has approximately 18,000 names of officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty inscribed on its marble walls.

    Candlelight Vigil/National Police Week
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 to be National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls to be National Police Week. National Police Week is an opportunity for people from across the country to gather in Washington, DC, to honor those who serve the law enforcement profession and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

On May 13 each year, the NLEOMF sponsors a Candlelight Vigil at the Memorial where the names of fallen officers are formally dedicated on the walls.

  • Recognizing Outstanding Service
    Officer of the Month program
Established in 1996, the Officer of the Month program honors active law enforcement officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service and devotion to duty.

  • Building a Living Legacy
    The National Law Enforcement Museum
The NLEOMF is behind the "A Matter of Honor" campaign to build the National Law Enforcement Museum, the largest and most comprehensive law enforcement museum and research facility in the world.

  • Achieving National Recognition In addition to securing Congressional authority and federal land to build the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and the National Law Enforcement Museum, the NLEOMF successfully advocated for federal laws that
    • Require all American flags to be lowered to half-staff each year on May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day.
    • Authorized the US Mint to issue 500,000 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Commemorative Silver Dollars, to raise approximately $1.5 million in proceeds for maintenance and repair of the Memorial.
