OFFICER THOMAS LANGONE New York City Police Department |
 | Police Officer Thomas Langone, age 39, epitomized what it means to be a public servant. So did his older brother, Peter, a Brooklyn firefighter who, at age 41, was considered the "elder statesman" of his firehouse. During their time off the Langone brothers were volunteer leaders at the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company. |
Though employed by separate departments, Thomas and Peter were occasionally called to the same emergency. In 1990, both had responded to the Avianca crash in Oyster Bay. In 1993, the Langone brothers were at the scene of the first World Trade Center bombings. In 1995, Thomas went to Oklahoma City to help after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building.
And on September 11, 2001, Thomas and Peter rushed separately to the World Trade Center for their last rescue effort. Both brothers perished in the collapse of the twin towers. Each left behind a grieving wife and two children.
