OFFICER LIAM CALLAHAN New York/New Jersey Port Authority |
 | No one was surprised that 22-year veteran Liam Callahan was among the first Port Authority rescuers on the scene at the World Trade Center. Nor was anyone surprised when this decorated officer who would do "anything for everyone" stayed to the tragic end.
Liam will be remembered not just for how he died, but for how he lived. He volunteered at his church so often that a parishioner once asked the priest if Liam had a job. The devoted husband and father of four was "always changing shifts just to make our lives work," recounts his wife. September 12, 2001, was to have been their 20th wedding anniversary. |
| A proud Irishman, Liam was a founder of the 25-member Port Authority Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Band. He was one of its four drummers, three of whom died on 9/11. His funeral included a procession of over 200 bagpipers from dozens of other police departments. |
