OFFICER MAURICE BARRY New York/New Jersey Port Authority |
 | September 11, 2001, wasn't the first time Officer Maurice Barry ran into the burning World Trade Center while others ran out in fear. He was there to help victims the first time the landmark towers were struck by terrorists, in 1993. It was his day off.
"He wasn't happy unless he was helping people," explains his widow, Marianne. That explains why, in addition to his police job, Maurice was also a Boy Scout leader and volunteer on his city's ambulance squad. This hero died the way he lived, helping people out of the burning towers until the very end. |
| Maurice, 48, had served with the Port Authority for 16 years. He was a loving husband and devoted father of two grown sons, Jon and Christian. Jon had joined the Army Reserves at his father's encouragement. "I think about what happened to my dad," he said after 9/11. "I want to go. I want to get the terrorists."
